This is from Laura Florand‘s first book from her Amour et Chocolat series entitled “The Chocolate Thief.” Sylvain has fallen in love with Cade but he realizes that he cannot make her stay just because he wants her to.

“Je suis tombé amoreux de toi,” he said, his voice angry as if he was fighting a wound he had always known was coming. “You do… what you decide to do. I don’t have any say over that. But I think I love you.”

They made me laugh (or WTF! moments)

I raise my glass to all the authors who have a great sense of humour, and who can convey it on paper with skill. I thought I would share the books that have been a source of a few (okay, more than a few) good laughs for me these past few years.

Laugh (Burnside # 2) by Mary Ann Rivers

Laugh Cover

Sam Burnside and Nina Paz go out on their very first date and things just go WRONG. I was rolling on the floor and laughing with tears streaming from my eyes by the time I finished reading about their nightmare date. It was pure Murphy’s Law in action. Mary Ann Rivers has a talent for making her readers feel what her characters are feeling be it loneliness, love, anger, lust, sadness, and – well – mortification.

Here’s an excerpt from Chapter 12 just to give you a feel of where their date is going (think the road to hell is truly paved with good intentions):

“What does your shirt say?”

Goddammit, PJ. “I don’t think it says anything. I think it’s just a design.”

She stopped and walked behind him. “No, I think it says something, it’s just very stylized. See, here.” She traced over his shoulders and he closed his eyes. “Huh.”

“What?”
“It says deeper. Deeper than what? Does that mean you’re really deep? Or that you go—”

“I think it’s just the brand, or the company or whatever.”

“Huh. I hadn’t pegged you for a logo hound.”

“I’m not.”

“It’s really shiny, too. Sparkles in the sunlight. I like these small blue rhinestones on the swirls.”

“There’re rhinestones?”

“You’re a rhinestone cowboy, baby. Who goes deeper, or so your shirt claims.”

“It’s swank.”

“What is?”

“The shirt. That’s what PJ said, that it was swank.”

“What does that mean again?”

Sam closed his eyes and yanked Nina in close. “I have no fucking idea.”

They started to walk again. “I actually do like the rhinestones, but you know what I like more?”

“Normal shirts?”

“I like that you wanted to look swank for me and let PJ dress you.”

Sam grinned. He couldn’t help it. He’d done something right without even trying or understanding exactly what the right thing was. Who’da thought?

You’ll have to keep reading because the date doesn’t end with just a swank shirt as collateral damage.

Walking down Fear Street (all over again…)

image

The very first R.L. Stine book that I read was The New Girl (see my prized book above) and I was instantly hooked. I was too young to be going to the book shop on my own back then so I had someone get the books for me. Dull days became interesting (think magical car like the one in the Cataluna Chronicles), and hot summer days just became a little bit chilly (thanks, 99 Fear Street). When I entered high school I was just so relieved that my school wasn’t populated with students straight out of Shadyside high (maybe, I don’t know), though the books sure did make a good source of daydreams while the teachers droned on and on.

image

Hearing that R.L. Stine is coming out with Party Games (you can read Chapter 1 here) after twenty years brings back a lot of memories like the scent of new books and the excitement of having a pile of books waiting to be read. I can’t wait to read it and relive taking that stroll (or maybe run) down Fear Street once again.

THIRSTY THURSDAY (2): INNOCENTLY HOT BOOK COVER

Thirsty

Thirsty Thursday is a weekly feature, hosted by Nikki & Keira @ Lazy Book Lovers, where we discuss all things swoon-worthy: from quotes, book covers, book boyfriends, and even that worth-the-wait book kiss.

The theme for this week is Innocently Hot Cover, and this is my pick:

Laugh Cover

Book: Laugh (Burnsides Book 2) by Mary Ann Rivers

Swoon Quality: A cute guy smiling.

Why: Sam Burnside is the oldest of four siblings. He’s a doctor who’s working hard to put up a low-income health clinic while at the same time being a big brother to Des, PJ, and Sara. He’s also good looking as observed by the woman who captures his attention, Nina Paz:

Even when Sam was frowning, arguing, and sputtering he still looked like he should be leaning against a surfboard stuck in the sand—the sun making his strawberry hair more gold than red, his gray eyes crinkle, his skin go sleek and gilded.
